How to migrate 1800 Drupal 7 sites

Harvard Web Publishing (HWP) is responsible for thousands of web sites. Most are simple: a few pages for a professor's or graduate student's personal site. A few are large, high-traffic sites: for example, public-facing sites for the police and HR departments. Over 17 months, we migrated about 1,800 sites from Drupal 7 to Drupal 10. This effort involved developers, project managers, designers, and agency partners.

This session will give an overview of the process: the background, the timeline, and mostly how HWP managed the scale of the project. It will briefly mention the 10,000 sites that were left behind.

Notes
I gave a version of this session at Evolve Drupal Boston in June, 2025, but they only gave me 20 minutes (plus 10 minutes of Q&A). I would love to give an expanded version of the session.
